Time sure does fly! The holidays are right around the corner, and soon 2013. Many good things have happened this past year. The township had a successful summer recreation program, sponsored a community wide family fun day, and maintained a level of township services that residents have come to rely on. Our recycling program has shown an increase in the volume amount of residential recycling. I attribute this to the sound decision made by the Board of Commissioners in recommending the purchase of 65 gallons recycling cans that were distributed to all residents free of charge. In doing so, your right to choose your own trash hauler was protected. On a down note, taxes are set to increase by approximately 6.7%, or .31 millage points. While taxes in Nether Providence Township are relatively on the low side, as compared to school taxes, any tax increase is extremely disappointing.
Unfortunately, the rise is taxes are beyond the control of the Board of Commissioners. A rise in police pension costs (38%), worker compensation (13%), police insurance coverage (12%), non-uniformed pension (9%), and sewer rates all played major factors in the tax increase. To defer payment of any one cost is irresponsible, and spells disaster for future budgets. On the positive side, discretionary costs that are under the control of the township are not rising, and the level of service provided by the township (i.e. leaf collection) remains unchanged.

Lastly, please take an opportunity this weekend to see the Santa Christmas float presented by the Garden City FireCompany. They really put a great deal of hard work in maintaining this 60 year neighborhood tradition. I posted the times the float will be in the 5th Ward in the newsletter. And the firefighters love chocolate chip cookies.
I would like to extend warm holiday wishes to everyone in the 5th Ward, Merry Christmas, and have a safe and healthy New Year.
Larry Baker, 5th Ward Commissioner, Nether Providence Twp.

Grant (CDBG).
Many 5th Ward households have been inquiring about when FIOS will be available in our area. We
have finally gotten through to someone at Verizon who is consulting with engineering about bringing
FIOS to the area. They consider our area the extended zone. They will be getting back to NPT
hopefully soon. As soon as I receive information, I will pass it along.

AROUND the BIG TOWN
Leaf collection has come to an end. All leaves after this week must be browned
bagged. The Township has bagged leaf pick up the second Tuesday of every month.
Please call the Township Building 610-566-4516 to schedule pick up..
The bridge on MacDade Blvd that has been under construction for the past several months
is finally ending. The bridge will be re-opening this Saturday, December 15th. PennDot
plans on removing the traffic signal on Rt320 at Bullens Lane. The 3-way stop sign at
Bullen Lane and Bullens Lane by the ballfield, however, will remain.
Nether Providence Township, in conjuction with the PRC (Pennsylvania Resource
Council), will be holding an e-waste collection of covered devices (computers/TVs
and corded items) held Jan. 12 from 9am to 2 pm at the Strath Haven MS lot. I
included a FAQ website for your convenience http://www.prc.org/easthtr/E-
waste%20FAQ.pdf
There is a motion on the table to authorize advertising of a scavenger ordinance that I
have been working on. In a nutshell, this ordinance will hopefully identify those vehicles
that roam our streets on a daily basis scrapping curbside discarded metal and other
materials. The ordinance places restrictions and controls on this type of activity that can
potentially invite crimes of opportunity.
In case you are unable to make the township meetings held the first two Thursdays
of every month at 7:30pm at the township building, you can watch the meetings on
the government access channel: COMCAST channel 10, VERIZON channel 37.
Congratulations to Strath Haven Senior Philip Thomas Vecchiolli, a 5th Ward resident
who recently earned Eagle Scout Honors. Philip began his scouting career at Cub pack
145 at Nether Providence Elementary School. He was also a member of BSA Troop 277
of Wallingford before joining BSA Troop 144 in Havertown. The township will be
honoring Philip on December 13, 2012 at 7:30pm at our legislative meeting.
The Nether Providence Elementary renovation draws near, and the school district is
preparing to begin reconstruction and expansion. Construction will begin in the
spring of 2013 and finish in late 2014.
The Leiper Open House will be held on December 16, 2012 from 1pm – 5pm. Please
take an opportunity to enjoy the history of Nether Providence Township.
The Turner Road Project, the project that enables commuters to safely navigate to
the Wallingford Train Station is now under way.

POLICE BLOTTER
There was a meeting held on Tuesday, November 27 at 7:00 pm at the Nether Providence
Township Building where County and Local officials discussed recent burglaries in the
Township and how the issue is being addressed. Attendees were Delaware County DA Jack
Whelan, Police Chief Thomas Flannery, Township Com missioners, State Representative
Joseph Hackett and representatives from the County CID. Ironically, that same day, an
individual was arrested that may have ties to all the burglaries. In any event, please be vigilant
in looking out for your fellow neighbors and call 911 when you see something suspicious. The
smallest things CAN make a difference. All calls will be kept confidential!
Recently, I sent out a sample soliciting permit that Nether Providence Twp provides individuals
when soliciting in the township. In order for an individual to receive this permit, they have to
register with the township & police prior to soliciting. Each and every solicitor MUST have this
permit on them with the appropriate sections filled out when soliciting in the township. If they
don't, call the police. This doesn't apply to charitable and non-profit organizations.
BIG THANK YOU TO THE PUBLIC WORKS FOR THEIR DEDICATION & HARD WORK
Leaf collection has ended, and the public works department is now gearing up to prepare their trucks for the winter season. As an FYI, NPT is the only township that has at least 10 rounds of leaf pickups along with year round bagged leaf pickup, and a drop off facility.
ONE LAST WORD……
MERRY CHRISTMAS
