"Seed of an Idea" is a service-learning curriculum-based fund-raiser being piloted this year at Wallingford Elementary School. To further the school district's goal of "going paperless," we have created a website to allow members of the WES community to pre-order products online. In order to build community, teach WES students real-life math and problem-solving skills, and to create excitement around this fund-raising effort, we have asked WES children to participate in some of the decision-making processes and to help us to fulfill orders for organic seeds and seedlings. Lesson plans include voting for the vegetables to be included in the sale and tabulating the raw data, comparison-shopping for seed suppliers, and deciding how best to measure and package our "wholesale" seeds into "retail" seed packets. By working together as a community, we can leverage the group buying power of many individuals in order to bring high-quality organic seeds and seedlings to the WES community at a low cost. Orders can be placed through January 31, 2013. This year, Seed of an Idea cannot offer shipping! Seeds will be sent home in the backpacks of the children whose families have ordered them as soon as possible after February 15, 2013, and seedlings can be picked up in late May or early June (date TBD).
