Toys For Tots Party December 15

The Marine Corps motto is Semper Fidelis, which means “Always Faithful.”

For 236 years, the Corps has faithfully served America from the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli.

These days, though, it seems as though Americans don’t have the same “Esprit de Corps” when it comes to donating to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

All over America, donations to the Toys for Tots program are down dramatically from previous years.

Obviously, there are many reasons for this. The economy isn’t great, which means people don’t have the disposable income needed to buy gifts.

But at this time of the year, especially, the Marine Corps is hoping people can find it in their hearts to spend a few extra bucks to help a needy child.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Maj. Bill Hendricks and a group of fellow Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Hendricks’ wife, Diane.

In the fall of 1947, Diane Hendricks handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill Hendricks determined that no agency existed, his wife told him he should start one.

He did.

The 1947 pilot project was so successful, the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. That year, Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since.
In 2010, despite an economy that remained in a downward spiral, Americans refused to let Toys for Tots fail, as more than 16.7 million toys had been distributed to nearly 7.2 million children.

Over the years Toys for Tots spokespersons have included John Wayne, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Brooke Shields, Charlton Heston, Sammy Davis Jr., Doris Day, Andy Griffith, Clint Eastwood, Johnny Carson, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and John Glenn. First ladies like Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush have served as National Toys for Tots spokespersons.

Of course, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program isn’t the only charity struggling for donations. Every year, organizations like the Salvation Army and United Way, among many others, seek contributions.

So, with the holiday season upon us, the Marine Corps is hoping a few good people will remember the less fortunate by donating to the Toys for Tots program.
