New recycling cans coming to Nether Providence

NETHER PROVIDENCE — Roomier collection cans for recyclables are on the way for township residents.

The 65-gallon, wheeled containers were purchased by the board of commissioners in September using state recycling grant dollars. Rehrig Pacific Co. was awarded the $177,000 contract.

Property owners will not be obligated to take the new cans if they opt to continue using much smaller red and green containers provided by the township many years ago.

In order to make residents aware of the impending delivery of the curbside collection cans, the commissioners voted on Oct. 13 to mail a postcard to all township homes providing key information.

Among other things, it will note that for those residents who want to turn in their old recyclables cans, the units will be handed over to Rehrig Pacific, which will recycle them and pay the municipality a modest amount for the material.

All told, the township ordered 4,100 of the new containers. Assistant Township Manager Dennis Sheehan said Rehrig Pacific will drop off the units at a rate of about 1,000 a day.
Two specifications were that the containers are to be black with a lid of a contrasting color and that the township name is to be stamped on the side.

Commissioners had asked the township’s Recycling Task Force to offer its recommendation on the best unit.

Jacque Knight, the task force’s chairwoman, said a 65-gallon model would work best because it would allow residents ample room for materials and therefore encourage increased recycling.
More detailed information on changes to the recycling program will be offered in a subsequent letter to be mailed to all homes later in the year by J.P. Mascaro & Sons, which will begin handling the curbside pickups of recyclables in the township at the start of 2012.

On that note, Commissioner Robert Kenworthy said J.P. Mascaro & Sons is interested in moving to a schedule that would consolidate all recyclables collections in the township to three days.

There could be advantages to such a switch, including eliminating confusion over pickups on holidays and fewer truck runs, Kenworthy said. The board plans further discussions with the company before any changes are put in place.
